The Inhabited Viewpoint
Casielles is not just any town; It is a challenge to the orography. Located at the top of a hill in the Desfiladero de los Beyos, this small rural town offers one of the most photogenic and dizzying views of Asturias.
The 23 Revolts
Its fame comes from its access: a narrow road that overcomes a brutal gradient through 23 hairpin curves in just 3 kilometers. Known by cyclists and motorcyclists as the “Asturian Alpe d’Huez”, climbing it is quite an experience (with caution!).
What to do upstairs?
- The Church of San Juan: A beautiful rural church that dominates the valley. The attached cemetery has probably the best views for eternal rest you can imagine.
- Panoramic Views: From any point in the town you can see the Picos de Europa and the deep gorge. The feeling of isolation and peace is total.
- Architecture: Walk among its granaries and stone houses, perfect examples of adaptation to the rugged terrain of Ponga.
A Place for Calm
Casielles was on the verge of being uninhabited, but today it resists thanks to its untamed beauty. It is the ideal place to sit on a stone wall, listen to the silence only broken by the cowbells and feel small before the immensity of the Pongueta mountain.
