The Stone Gorge
The Desfiladero de los Beyos is one of the most spectacular roads in northern Spain (N-625). For more than 10 kilometers, the Sella River has cut through the limestone rock, creating a narrow canyon with walls that rise hundreds of meters into the sky, leaving barely any room for the river and the asphalt.
A Scenic Journey
Touring this gorge by car or motorcycle is an experience in itself. The road meanders following the course of the river, passing through natural tunnels and under impressive rock overhangs.
Stopping Points
Although the road is narrow, there are strategic sidings where you can stop to admire the landscape:
- Vidosa Bridge: A classic stop with a hotel and an impressive waterfall (Aguasaliu) that falls almost onto the road, especially visible in the rainy season.
- La Huera del Sella: Areas where the river calms down and forms turquoise pools.
The Beyos Cheese
This abrupt geography has marked the character of its people and its products. Here Queso de los Beyos (IGP) is made, a small cheese with a buttery texture and intense flavor, which you can buy in the towns in the area or taste in local restaurants.
Living Geology
Look at the walls of the gorge. You will see folds, twisted strata and whimsical shapes that tell the turbulent geological history of the Cantabrian Mountains. It is an open-air geology book.
