The Ponga Cup
Pico Tiatordos (1,951 m) is, without a doubt, the most emblematic mountain in the municipality of Ponga. Its silhouette is unmistakable: a huge limestone mass that, seen from certain angles (especially from the west), looks like a perfect cup or a balcony hanging over the void.
The Infinite Viewpoint
Reaching its summit is the dream of many mountaineers. The reward is one of the best panoramic views of Asturias:
- To the south: the Redes Natural Park.
- To the east: the western massif of the Picos de Europa (Cornión) rises majestically.
- At your feet: a vertical drop of more than 500 meters into the breath-taking valley (the famous north face or “Copa”).
Ascent Routes
Although it is a technically accessible mountain (it does not require climbing), it requires a good physical background due to the slope.
- From Taranes (Ponga): The classic Pongueta route. Climb through the Foz de la Escalada, a beautiful ravine, and return through the Taranes forest. There are about 1,300 meters of accumulated unevenness.
- From Pendones (Redes): The alternative from the neighboring council, equally beautiful and demanding.
Tips
- Water: Bring plenty of water, in the high limestone area there are no sources.
- Be careful with fog: In the mountains, the weather changes quickly.
- The summit: The summit is a ridge with an impressive drop to the north. Use extreme caution when looking out.
