The Giant of Somiedo
Lago del Valle holds the title of being the largest lake in Asturias. Located at the foot of a textbook glacial cirque, this body of water measuring 24 hectares and more than 40 meters deep commands respect and beauty in equal parts.
A Lake with History and Double Bottom
Although its origin is purely glacial, the lake we see today has a little human “help.” It was raised by a dam for hydroelectric use at the La Malva power plant (the first in Asturias). This explains why an island feature stands out in the center of the lake, which becomes more visible when the water level drops.
Access Routes
Getting here is a mandatory pilgrimage if you visit Somiedo. The classic route starts from the town of Valle de Lago.
- By the Sun: The main path, a wide and comfortable track that offers panoramic views of the entire valley in a “U” shape.
- By the Shade: An alternative path that runs along the opposite slope, immersed in a beautiful beech forest that offers coolness in summer.
The ideal is to do a circular route: go up in the sun and down in the shade (or vice versa).
What to do there?
- Alpine picnic: There are meadows around the lake perfect for resting and having a bite to eat (remember to take your trash!).
- Photography: The cirque of mountains that surrounds the lake (Pico Albo, Peña Orniz) is reflected in the water creating incredible postcards, especially at sunset.
- Observation: It is a quiet place (if you go early or outside of high season) where you can connect with the immensity of nature.
Practical Information
