Somiedo Ecomuseum

It shows traditional life and the famous broom-roofed houses (teitos) in Pola de Somiedo and Veigas.

A Journey to the Rural Past

The Ecomuseum of Somiedo is not a typical museum. It is a window open to a way of life that has resisted the passage of centuries in perfect harmony with nature. Here you will discover how the Somedans lived, their trades and, above all, their unique architecture: the teitos.

Two Headquarters, One History

The Ecomuseum is divided into two complementary spaces:

  1. Los Oficios (Pola de Somiedo): Located in the fairgrounds, it shows the tools and techniques of local artisans.
  • Madreñeiros: The creators of the famous wooden madreñeiros.
  • Ferreiros: The art of forging.
  • Carpenters: Wood work, vital in the construction of cars and implements.
  1. The House (Veigas): A few kilometers away, in the town of Veigas, three houses are preserved (the Casa de Juanín, the Casa de Vicentón and the Casa de Ecripta) with their original structure and their vegetal roofs (teitos de broom).
  • El Llar: The kitchen, the heart of the house where life was made around the fire.
  • La Cuadra: On the ground floor, where the heat from the animals helped heat the upper house.

Why visit it?

It is essential to understand the landscape that surrounds you. The brañas that you see in the mountains are not a coincidence, they are the result of this agricultural and livestock system that the Ecomuseum explains perfectly.

Hours and Visits

Check the schedules at the Pola de Somiedo Tourist Office, as they vary depending on the season. Visits to Veigas houses are usually guided, which greatly enriches the experience with local anecdotes.
