Ascension to Peña del Viento

6h 15.3 Km 950 m

Itinerary

High mountains in their purest form. From the mythical Brañagallones, this circular route conquers two emblematic peaks: the Peña del Viento and the Cantu l'Osu, offering the best panoramic views of the Redes Natural Park.

Route Description

This is a route for mountaineers looking for challenges and visual rewards. Starting in Brañagallones, the heart of Redes, the ascent to Peña del Viento takes you to the limit with León, walking through the “techumbe” of the park.

The first part of the route goes up the valley to Valdebezón, a place where it is common to see deer grazing. From there, the slope becomes harder to reach the ridge. Once at the top of Peña del Viento, the views are endless: Picos de Europa, Montaña Palentina, Ubiña and all the greenery of Asturias at your feet.

But the route does not end there. The return is usually made towards the neighbor Cantu l’Osu. It is a spectacular aerial terrain that requires caution, but offers a unique perspective of the Brañagallones glacial cirque from above.

The final descent towards the refuge tests the knees, closing a perfect circle of mountain, forest and alpine meadow.

💡 Practical Tips

  • Access: To get to Brañagallones, it is best to book the 4x4 taxi from Bezanes, saving you the climb and saving your strength for the summit.
  • Level: It is high mountain terrain. It requires good orientation (the fog is treacherous in the ridge) and physical fitness.
  • Water: Load water at Brañagallones or at the Valdebezón fountain; on the crest there is none.
  • Wind: As the name suggests, the summit is very exposed. Wear a windbreaker even in summer.

📸 Key Points

  • The view of the Brañagallones Circus from the Cantu l’Osu.
  • The sighting of chamois in rocky areas.
  • The immensity of the landscape from Peña del Viento.
  • The contrasts between the beech forest and the limestone rock.
