Itinerary
The Route to Brañagallones (PR.AS-66) is a trip to the wild heart of Redes. Ascend from Bezanes through magical forests until reaching a spectacular glacial cirque, home of the capercaillie and one of the most beautiful brañas in the Cantabrian Mountains.
Route Description
The route to Brañagallones is much more than a walk; It is an immersion in the history and nature of Redes Natural Park. The name itself, which means “grouse braña”, evokes the faunal wealth of this privileged environment.
The route begins in Bezanes, ascending a track that, although steep at the beginning, offers unforgettable views of the Nalón valley. As you gain altitude, the landscape transforms, going from rural areas to dense forests of chestnut and beech trees that seem straight out of a story.
One of the milestones along the way is the Mirador del Texu l’Oración, a perfect point to catch your breath and admire the immensity of the landscape. Later, you will cross the Crestón Tunnel, a curious rock formation that acts as a gateway to the upper valley.
Upon reaching Braña de Brañagallones, the forest opens up to reveal an impressive glacial cirque surrounded by majestic peaks such as Cantu l’Osu and Peña’l Vientu. Here you will find the mountain refuge and traditional shepherds’ huts, witnesses of an ancestral way of life. It is the ideal place to rest, eat and, if you are lucky and patient, watch chamois or listen to the song of the capercaillie in spring.
💡 Practical Tips
- Hydration: Carry enough water, especially in summer, although you will find fountains along the way.
- Footwear: Use comfortable hiking boots; The track is good, but the distance is considerable.
- Weather: Check the weather forecast. In winter, snow can make access difficult and require the use of snowshoes.
- Respect: You are in grouse and brown bear area. Maintain silence and do not go off the marked paths.
