Route to the Vega de Pociellu

4h 30min 13 Km 500 m

Itinerary

A deep dive into the Redes forest. The route crosses the spectacular Fabucao beech forest to reach Pociellu, one of the largest and most remote sheepfolds in the park, located at the head of the Nalón River.

Route Description

The route to the Vega de Pociellu is one of the most authentic excursions that can be done in the Redes Natural Park. Pociellu is a huge mountain meadow, dotted with cabins and holly trees, that conveys a feeling of isolation and peace difficult to find elsewhere.

The itinerary usually begins on the road that goes up to Puerto de Tarna (AS-117), near the border with León. From the first moment, the path enters the domain of the forest. The Fabucao Beech Forest is the undisputed protagonist of the day; a mature, dense and mysterious forest, where ancient trees cover the path with their shadow.

After passing the La Ablanosa sheepfold, the path opens its way until it reaches Pociellu. This place is a natural amphitheater surrounded by peaks and forests, where the Nalón River is born (at the Nalona source, somewhat higher up). It is an ideal place to observe the park’s fauna, such as chamois and deer, especially at dawn or dusk.

Although the route does not present technical difficulties, its length and the mountain environment require being prepared. In winter, Pociellu is usually covered in snow, becoming a paradise for snowshoes.

💡 Practical Tips

  • Orientation: Although the trail is clear, fog can appear quickly inside the forest and in the meadows. Bring a map or GPS.
  • Water: There are fountains, but it is advisable to bring water, especially in summer.
  • Mud: The path through the beech forest can have very muddy sections after the rains. Gaiters and good boots are recommended.
  • Coverage: It is an area with very little or no mobile coverage. Notify your route before leaving.
