About the route
A short circular walk from the legendary Mirador del Fitu, one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the entire Asturian coast. From 1,150 m altitude, the panorama stretches from the Cantabrian Sea to the three massifs of the Picos de Europa, with the Sella valley in the foreground. A perfect route for families or as a scenic stop between longer stages.
Route Description
Mirador del Fitu is considered one of the twenty best viewpoints in Spain. At 1,150 metres on the Sierra del Sueve — right on the southern edge of the National Park — it offers a unique panorama: to the north, the Cantabrian Sea glittering between islands and inlets; to the south, the three massifs of the Picos de Europa commanding the horizon; to the east, the Sella valley snaking toward Arriondas; and to the west, the Cantabrian range fading into haze.
The circular walk from the viewpoint is short and accessible, perfect for families with young children or as an active pause during a park visit. The trail descends via a well-marked path through oaks and hazels to a small summer pasture, with lateral views of the sea and the peaks, before returning on a forest track.
The route has no technical difficulty: the gradient is gentle, the path is wide and the ground is firm for almost the entire distance. In spring, the hillside fills with wildflowers and it is possible to see Asturcón ponies — the wild horses of the Sierra del Sueve — grazing on the open meadows.
💡 Practical Tips
- Access: Via the AS-114 road between Arriondas and Ribadesella, signposted turn-off to Mirador del Fitu. The last kilometre of track is asphalted.
- Best times: At dawn or dusk, when the low light illuminates both the sea and the Picos summits simultaneously.
- Asturcón ponies: The Sierra del Sueve is the natural habitat of this wild pony breed. They are commonly seen all along the route.
- Combine the visit: The viewpoint is 10 minutes from Arriondas town centre, the starting point for the Sella river canoe descent.
📸 Key Highlights
- The 180° panorama from the viewpoint: sea and mountains in one frame.
- Asturcón ponies roaming freely across the Sueve meadows.
- The Sella valley from above, with the river glinting through the fields.
- The three Picos massifs aligned to the south on a clear day.
