Itinerary
Enter the largest and best preserved beech forest in Asturias. A comfortable track (PR.AS-181) guides you under an infinite vegetal canopy to the monumental Roblón de Bustiello.
Route Description
The Bosque de Peloño is, simply, a sanctuary. Declared a Partial Natural Reserve, this immense beech forest has miraculously survived logging thanks to Ponga’s historical isolation. In autumn, walking here is walking through an impressionistic painting of ochers and reds.
The route (part of PR.AS-181) begins at Mirador de Les Bedules, which can be reached by car from San Juan de Beleño. The views from the parking lot towards the Picos de Europa (Western Massif) and Tiatordos peak are breathtaking.
The route runs along a very comfortable forest track, known as the “Camín de los Arrieros”, which makes it suitable for bicycles and families. We walk always protected by the shade of the beech trees until we reach Collada Granceno, a clearing in the forest ideal for a break.
Shortly after, a descending detour takes us to visit the guardian of the forest: the Bustiello Roblón. An ancient oak of colossal dimensions that commands respect.
If you want a bigger adventure, the track continues to the Ermita de Arcenorio, on the border with León, but this implies a much longer and more demanding route (almost 30 km round trip).
💡 Practical Tips
- Autumn: It is the star season. If you go on a weekend in October/November, get up early to park at Les Bedules.
- Rain: The humid and foggy environment gives it a magical touch, but wear a good raincoat.
- Fauna: Peloño is home to bears and grouse. Silence is key to having any chance of sighting (although it is difficult).
- Coverage: It is zero in almost the entire route. Download the maps beforehand.
