Itinerary
The most famous greenway in Asturias. A spectacular route on an old mining railway that crosses gorges, tunnels and the famous bear fence. Ideal for cycling and with the family.
Route Description
The Bear Trail needs no introduction; It is the family plan par excellence in Asturias. This greenway recovers the route of the mining train that brought coal from Teverga and Quirós to Trubia, turning it into a paved, safe cycling track with a negative slope (downhill) that is imperceptible but constant if done from Teverga.
The most popular section starts from Entrago (San Martín de Teverga). From here, we let ourselves be carried away by inertia through illuminated tunnels and bridges that cross the river, encased in the spectacular Valdecerezales gorge, whose vertical walls are impressive.
Halfway there we arrive at Proaza, home of the Fundación Oso de Asturias. Here are the bear enclosures where Paca and Tola lived, symbols of the recovery of the species, and where work continues today on conservation and environmental education.
The tour ends in Tuñón, always surrounded by Atlantic forest and with the Trubia River as a travel companion.
💡 Practical Tips
- Rental: The usual thing is to rent the bike at Entrago and return it in Tuñón (or have the company pick you and the bike up at the end). Reserve in advance.
- Children: It is perfect for children, strollers and wheelchairs. Everything is paved and with protective fences.
- Light: Although the tunnels have light, it doesn’t hurt to carry a headlamp or light on your bike just in case.
- Bears: The best time to try to see them is early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
📸 Key Points
- Tunnels excavated in living rock.
- The narrowness of the Peñas Juntas gorge.
- The Cercado Osero in Proaza.
- The Buyera recreational area, perfect for a picnic.
