About the route
A fairy tale walk through the Montegrande Beech Forest, the third largest forest in Asturias, which culminates in three impressive waterfalls with a total height of 100 meters.
Route Description
The route to the Xiblu Waterfall is one of the most appreciated in the Las Ubiñas-La Mesa Natural Park. It combines the majesty of a mature forest with the spectacular nature of water.
The route begins near Páramo, immediately entering the Beech Forest of Montegrande. To walk here is to do so under a green (or golden in autumn) canopy that barely lets in the light. The initial track is very comfortable, ideal for chatting and enjoying the surroundings without physical effort.
After a few kilometers, a detour takes us off the track and onto a wilder path that crosses the river. Here the forest closes and the slope increases slightly, anticipating the end.
Suddenly, the roar of the water warns us. The Xiblu (which means “whistle” in Asturian, due to the sound of wind and water) appears before us: three successive waterfalls that fall from more than 100 meters high in total. A spectacle of natural force that reaches its maximum splendor during the thaw season.
💡 Practical Tips
- Mud: It is a humid beech forest, so it is very likely to find mud on the stretch of trail. Wear boots (and gaiters if it has rained a lot).
- Autumn: It is the prime time to visit Montegrande. The colors are incredible.
- Children: The first part per track is perfect for them. The final stretch requires a little more attention but is affordable.
- Bear: You are in one of the areas with the highest density of bears in the Cordillera. Respect and silence are essential.
