An Underground Cathedral
Located in the spectacular Desfiladero de la Estrechura (near the town of Fresnedo), Cueva Huerta is one of the largest cavities in Asturias, with more than 14 kilometers of explored galleries. Declared a Natural Monument, it is a vital refuge for several species of bats.
Types of Visit
The best thing about Cueva Huerta is that it offers experiences for all levels of adventure:
- Walkway (Tourist): A simple route suitable for the whole family (children from 4-6 years old) on a wooden walkway. It lasts about 45-50 minutes and allows you to see the main geological formations without getting dirty or tired.
- Speleotourism (Adventure): For the most daring. Equipped with a suit, helmet and headlamp, you will enter the deepest galleries, crawl and discover the cave in its wild state. It lasts about 2-3 hours and requires prior reservation.
What will you see?
Stalactites, stalagmites, columns and flows formed drop by drop over thousands of years. The cave acts as a natural drain for the Valdesampedro River, so in times of heavy rain you can hear and even see the river roaring inside.
