The Asturian Escorial
On the outskirts of Cangas del Narcea, the Monastery of San Juan Bautista de Corias surprises with its monumentality. Founded in the 11th century by the counts Piniolo and Aldonza, the current building is a masterpiece of the neoclassical style (18th century) that today houses a National Parador.
What to visit?
Although part of it is a hotel, the monumental complex offers essential cultural visits:
- Church: Large, with baroque altarpieces and a Romanesque Christ from the 12th century (the “Christ of the Cantonada”) of great value.
- Cloister: A space of peace and symmetry.
- Excavations: In the subsoil you can see remains of the original medieval foundation.
Wine Tradition
Corias is closely linked to Cangas Wine (DOP). The monks were the ones who reintroduced and perfected vine cultivation on these steep slopes.
- Winery: The monastery itself houses a modern winery that can be visited. They offer guided tours that explain the “heroic viticulture” of the area and tastings of their unique wines, made with native varieties such as Albarín, Verdejo Negro and Carrasquín.
