The Forbidden Forest
The Muniellos Comprehensive Natural Reserve is the wild heart of Asturias. Visiting it is not just a walk, it is a privilege. To protect this unique ecosystem, access is limited to 20 people per day.
Why is it so special?
Muniellos is nature left to its free will. Here you will see:
- Century oaks: Trees with centuries of history covered in lichens (cappuccino beards), an indicator of the extreme purity of the air.
- Fauna: It is the kingdom of the Cantabrian brown bear. There are also wolves, grouse, otters and an immense variety of forest birds.
How to apply for permission
Entering Muniellos requires planning:
- Application: It is done online on the website of the Principality of Asturias. The deadline opens on December 15 for visits the following year.
- Confirmation: You must confirm your reservation between 15 and 23 days before the date. If not, you lose your place.
- Free: Admission is free, but control is strict. Bring your ID.
The Route
The visit begins at the Tablizas Reception Center. There are two main options that the guards will explain to you:
- River Route: Simpler and lower, round trip.
- Ruta Grande (Fonculebrera): Circular, about 20 km and somewhat physically demanding, but offering the most spectacular views of the valley.
Golden Standards
- Pets are not allowed.
- Don’t go off the marked trails.
- Absolute silence so as not to disturb the fauna and increase your chances of seeing it.
