The Soul of the Forest Made a Tool
In the heart of the town of Veneros, occupying a magnificent 16th century manor house, is the Wood Museum. This space is a tribute to the raw material that has sustained life in Redes for centuries: the wood from its endless forests.
La Madreña: All-Terrain Footwear
The museum has a special role: la madreña. This wooden shoe, raised on three studs (“tacos”), is a work of popular engineering perfect for walking on the mud and snow of Asturian roads without getting wet or dirty.
In the exhibition you will see:
- Tools: Adzes, drills and gouges used to hollow out and carve wood.
- Process: How the wood (birch, beech, walnut) is chosen and dried before working.
- Typology: Different models of Madreñas depending on the area of Asturias.
Beyond the Clogs
In addition to Madreñas, the museum shows all types of farm implements, furniture and household utensils (bowls, spoons) made by hand. There is also a section dedicated to forestry tools, remembering the hard work of lumberjacks.
Madreña Workshop (Pendones)
The museum has an annex in the town of Pendones (also famous for its route to Tabayón del Mongayu), where you can visit a traditional workshop and, sometimes, see live demonstrations.
