Deception in its purest form. A demanding route that combines bear and wolf history with a first-rate glacial landscape. The Fasgueo lagoons are a hidden treasure bordering León.
Route Description
The Fasgueo Lagoons Route is one of the most complete in the council of Degaña. It not only offers wild nature, but also ethnography lessons.
The path begins in Degaña, ascending strongly through a forest of oaks and birches. The first obligatory stop is Tesu Calechu, a strategic place where remains of ancient traps and surveillance posts for hunting the wolf, a mythical animal in these lands, are preserved.
As we gain altitude, the forest disappears and we enter the domain of the alpine scrub. The effort is worth it when you reach the Lagunas de Fasgueo, two eyes of water of glacial origin located under the watchful eye of peaks that reach 2,000 meters. It is a place of absolute peace, bordering the Leonese region of Laciana.
💡 Practical Tips
- Unevenness: It is a route with a considerable unevenness (almost 1,000m accumulated if you leave the town). Requires good physical fitness.
- Water: Bring enough water for the entire day.
- Fauna: It is a very important bear zone. If you’re lucky and have binoculars, you might spot some on the opposite slopes.
- Alternative: The route can be shortened leaving from the Port of Valdeprado, reducing gradient and distance.

Ascenso por el antiguo Camino Real hacia el puerto.
