About the route
The high mountains within everyone's reach. A short but intense ascent from the Leitariegos Pass that offers one of the best panoramic views of Asturias and a fairy-tale glacial lagoon.
Route Description
Cueto de Arbas is a 2,002 meter peak that marks the geographical limit of the natural park. Its access from the Puerto de Leitariegos (1,525 m) makes it one of the most affordable “dosmileros” in the region, perfect for starting out in mountaineering.
The route begins comfortably, taking us in a few minutes to the jewel in the crown: the Arbás Lagoon. This lake of glacial origin is nestled in a perfect cirque, surrounded by vertical walls that are reflected in its dark waters.
From the lagoon, the path gets really steep. We have to overcome a steep slope to gain the ridge, but the effort has immediate reward. The summit offers a 360-degree view: to the west the Ancares and the Muniellos Reserve; to the east, the Ubiña Massif and the Cantabrian Mountains.
💡 Practical Tips
- Winter: With snow it is a beautiful route to do with snowshoes, but be careful with the ice in the high area.
- Wind: Being an isolated summit, it usually blows strongly. Take a windbreaker.
- Sunset: It is one of the best places in Asturias to see the sunset.
- Lagoon: Bathing is prohibited. It is a very fragile ecosystem inhabited by protected amphibians.
📸 Key Points
- The reflection of the peak in the Arbás Lagoon.
- The sea of mountains that can be seen from the top.
- High mountain vegetation (blueberries and heather).
