Arcediano Trail

Route Description

The Arcediano Trail is one of the most important historic paths in northern Spain. For centuries it was one of the main communication routes between Asturias and the Meseta, linking Amieva with the Sajambre valley (León), and it was travelled by shepherds, muleteers and traders. Today it is a demanding mountain route that traverses the western massif of the Picos de Europa and crosses the Portillera de Beza (1,512 m), on the divide between Asturias and León.

The path starts in the village of Amieva, beside the river Sella, and ascends through the Dobra Valley via ancient oak woodland and sloping meadows. The elevation gain is constant: more than 900 metres up to the Portillera de Beza.

As height is gained, woodland gives way to summer pastures. The Vega de Toneyu, where the river of the same name rises and where the Toneyu majada stands, is one of the highlights halfway along the route.

The Portillera de Beza (1,512 m) is the day’s high point and marks the crossing between León and Asturias. On clear days you look out over the western or Cornión massif, with the Leonese hillsides descending toward the Sajambre valley to the south.

💡 Practical Tips

• Navigation: The trail is well marked to the majadas. On the upper section carry a map or GPS — cattle tracks can be confusing.
• Footwear: Stiff-soled boots are essential. The lower stretch is rocky and wet.
• Water: Carry enough water from the start. There is no water at the Beza pass.
• Flora: In spring and early summer the hillsides are covered in wild narcissus, gentians and orchids.
