About the route
A historic path that links Asturias with Castile through the heart of the eastern massif of the Picos de Europa. The Arcediano Trail was for centuries the main communication route between Amieva and León, and today offers one of the most complete panoramas in the park, with views of the Dobra gorge and the Cornión peaks.
Route Description
The Arcediano Trail is one of the most important historic paths in northern Spain. For centuries it was the only communication route between the Amieva district (Asturias) and the Alto Esla (León), used by shepherds, muleteers and pilgrims. Today it is a moderate-difficulty hiking route that traverses the eastern massif of the Picos de Europa and ends at one of the highest mountain passes in the park.
The path starts in the village of Amieva, beside the river Sella, and ascends through the Dobra Valley via ancient oak woodland and sloping meadows. The elevation gain is constant but never brutal: 800 metres spread over 7 km of ascent.
As height is gained, woodland gives way to summer pastures. The La Rondiella majadas are the usual midway rest point, with a spring and spectacular views of the gorge opening to the north.
Puerto del Arcediano (1,918 m) is the day’s high point. On clear days the panorama extends from the Cantabrian Sea to the peaks of the eastern massif, with the Sierra del Cornión to the west and the Leonese hillsides descending toward the Esla to the south.
💡 Practical Tips
- Navigation: The trail is well marked to the majadas. On the upper section carry a map or GPS — cattle tracks can be confusing.
- Footwear: Stiff-soled boots are essential. The lower stretch is rocky and wet.
- Water: Spring at La Rondiella. No water at the pass — fill up before the final stretch.
- Flora: In spring and early summer the hillsides are covered in wild narcissus, gentians and orchids.
