Itinerary
An ideal trail for initiation in Somiedo. It connects the La Malva Recreational Area with the town of Castro, offering a relaxing walk among holm oak forests, industrial history and views of the peaks.
Route Description
The Route of Castro (PR.AS-13) is the perfect option for those looking to enjoy the nature of Somiedo without great physical demands. It is a linear route, with very little unevenness, that runs through the lower part of the valley, which allows it to be done almost any time of the year.
The starting point is the La Malva Recreational Area, where the first hydroelectric plant in Asturias is also located. This modernist-style building, inaugurated in 1917, blends surprisingly well into the rugged landscape of the gorge.
The path advances parallel to the Somiedo River, immersed in lush vegetation where holm oaks stand out, a Mediterranean tree that here finds refuge in the sunny limestone walls. Halfway there, we find the Cueva de La Malva, a cool corner where a spring gushes out.
At the end of the walk Castro awaits us, a small village hanging on the hillside. From its viewpoint you get a fantastic perspective of the valley and the impressive rock walls that guard the entrance to the natural park. It is a privileged place to observe the flight of griffon vultures and, with luck, the golden eagle.
💡 Practical Tips
- Children: Totally recommended for families with a stroller (baby carrier is better for the last stretch to town).
- History: Read the panels about the hydroelectric plant to understand the importance of this engineering work.
- Water: You can refill your canteen at the fountain in the Cueva de La Malva.
- Bear: Although it is a low area, during cherry season (June-July) bears sometimes approach the orchards near Castro.
📸 Key Points
- The industrial architecture of the Central de La Malva.
- The contrast between the green of the valley and the gray rock of the gorge.
