Braña de Mumián Route

2h 15min 6.5 Km 170 m

Itinerary

It crosses beautiful mountain landscapes and forests from the cattle braña of El Llamardal to Mumián, offering great opportunities for sighting local fauna.

Route Description

The PR route. AS-11 connects the towns of Llamardelle and Caunedo, although the most common thing is to go up from the Port or from Llamardelle and return. The route begins with an ascent through a mixed, shady forest of beech and birch, ideal for hot days.

Upon reaching Braña de Mumián, the forest opens up and the walker finds a group of teito cabins (“olleras” to cool milk) located on a slope with privileged views of the Somiedo Valley and the Mesa mountain range. It is an impressive natural balcony.

A prominent element of this braña is the Fuente el Caño, famous for the purity of its water. The landscape alternates areas of grass (“veigas”) with rocky outcrops of white limestone and small stands of ancient holly trees.

During the gentle descent towards Caunedo (if you cross), the route crosses areas of Atlantic scrubland and allows you to observe the traditional rural architecture of the area with its granaries and bread baskets.

💡 Practical Tips

  • Silence: It is a quiet area. If you go quietly, you might hear the black woodpecker or see roe deer among the trees.
  • Sunset: Mumián at sunset, with the golden light on the limestone, is magical.
  • Best time: Autumn to enjoy the colors of the beech forest, or spring for the mountain flowers.

📸 Key Points

  • The views of the main valley of Somiedo from the braña.
  • The contrast between the white limestone and the green of the pastures.
  • La Fuente el Caño and its surroundings.
