Marabio Mountain Pastures Route

Route Description

The Ports of Marabio are a geological rarity declared a Natural Monument. Imagine an immense plateau of green pastures located high up, but pierced by hundreds of cracks, caves and sinkholes due to the erosion of the limestone rock. It is a textbook karst landscape.

The route is simple and very open, perfect to enjoy with the family. We start from the emblematic Ermita de Santa Ana, meeting place for the vaqueiros of Teverga, Yernes and Tameza. The path runs between livestock (cows and horses) that roam freely.

Along the route we will encounter curious phenomena such as the Piedallonga Sink, where the stream mysteriously disappears underground to emerge kilometers further down. We will also pass through lagoons that appear and disappear depending on the season, creating water mirrors where the clouds are reflected.

It is a place of silence and broad horizons, very different from the closed river valleys of other areas of the park.

💡 Practical Tips

• Fog: Being an open plateau, fog enters easily and it is very easy to become disoriented. Avoid the route with poor foresight.
• Water: There are hardly any shadows or reliable sources along the route. Bring sun protection and water.
• Geology: Be careful with cracks and chasms if you go off the marked paths. Some are deep.
• Accessibility: The terrain is quite flat, although irregular due to the stone.
