Ascension to Tiatordos Peak

6h 30min 15 Km 1.400 m

Itinerary

Tiatordos (1,951 m) is the perfect mountain. Its famous 'Copa' hangs over the void offering one of the most iconic images of the Asturian mountains. A demanding ascent for summit collectors.

Route Description

Tiatordos is not the highest mountain in Ponga, but it is the most admired. From San Juan de Beleño it looks like an impregnable pyramid, but it is from its own summit where it reveals its secret: a 500-meter concave vertical wall known as “The Cup”.

The classic route starts from Taranes. The beginning is a gentle warm-up until we enter the Foz de la Escalada, a spectacular ravine where the path decisively gains height between rocks and forest. Upon leaving the gorge, the landscape opens up to the Majada de Entregüé, a perfect balcony to catch your breath.

From here, the summit is already visible. We undertake the final climb through high mountain meadows until we reach the trig vertex (1,951 m). The feeling of emptiness when looking out over the eastern edge is indescribable: beneath our feet, the vertical drop towards the Peloño y León valley takes your breath away.

💡 Practical Tips

  • Physical form: It is a long route with a lot of unevenness (almost 1,400m accumulated). It requires being in shape.
  • Water: There are watering holes in the sheepfolds, but it is better not to trust them and bring water from Taranes.
  • Footwear: Essential mountain boot.
  • Vertigo: The summit is aerial towards the east. Caution when looking out.

📸 Key Points

  • The dizzying view of La Copa falling towards Peloño.
  • The enclosed environment of the Foz de la Escalada.
  • The views of the Cornión Massif (Picos de Europa) that seem within reach.
