Saliencia Lakes Route

3h (circular) 8 Km 350 m

Itinerary

The most iconic landscape of Somiedo. A circular route from Alto de la Farrapona that visits four glacial lakes: La Cueva, Almagrera, Cerveriz and Calabazosa, in a breathtaking high mountain environment.

Route Description

The Saliencia Lakes route (PR.AS-15) is a must-see in Asturias. Located on the border with León, this lake complex of glacial origin has been declared a Natural Monument.

The route starts from Alto de la Farrapona, an exceptional natural viewpoint. From there, we descend towards the Lake de la Cueva, unmistakable for its dark waters and the reddish rock environment, heritage of the old Santa Rita iron mine. Remains of the mining facilities can still be seen.

The steepest climb takes us to the Laguna de Almagrera (which sometimes dries up in summer) and opens the way to a vast alpine plain: the Vega de Cerveriz. Here lies Lake Cerveriz, with green waters and surrounded by pastures where cows and chamois coexist.

A little further on lies Lake Calabazosa (or Black Lake), the deepest and wildest of all. The silence here is absolute. The return can be done by closing the circuit along a path that offers aerial perspectives over Cave Lake before returning to the parking lot.

💡 Practical Tips

  • Footwear: Mountain boots are recommended, the terrain is rocky.
  • Climate: At 1,700 meters, the weather is unpredictable. Wear warm clothes.
  • Mine: Respect the remains of the Santa Rita mine, they are industrial heritage.
  • Connection: From Cerveriz you can continue towards Lago del Valle (much longer route).

📸 Key Points

  • The reddish color of the mine contrasting with the blue of the Cave Lake.
  • The views of the Masizo de las Ubiñas from Alto de la Farrapona.
  • The panoramic view of Lake Calabazosa from the hill.
  • The geological folds in the limestone walls.
