Pigüeña Valley Route

2h 30min 7 Km 450 m

Itinerary

A trip back in time to the culture of the 'vaqueiros de alzada'. This simple route goes up the valley of the Pigüeña River to La Pornacal, the largest and most spectacular group of teito cabins in all of Somiedo.

Route Description

The route to Braña de La Pornacal (PR.AS-14) is not just a trail, it is an open-air ethnographic museum. Located in the Pigüeña valley, this braña represents the essence of Someda transhumance, a tradition that has shaped the landscape for centuries.

The path begins in Villar de Vildas, a town that preserves enviable traditional architecture. From there, the track ascends with a moderate but constant slope, always with the sound of the Pigüeña River accompanying us. Oak and beech forests dot the slopes, while the valley opens up towards the mountains.

Upon arriving at La Pornacal, the vision is striking: more than 30 stone cabins with vegetal roofs (teitos) are grouped in neighborhoods, defying the passage of time. It is the perfect place to imagine the life of the vaqueiros who spent the summer months here with their cattle.

For those who want a little more, the trail continues towards Braña de los Cuartos (Braña Viecha), located at a higher altitude and where the landscape becomes purely alpine, under the watchful eye of Pico Cornón.

💡 Practical Tips

  • Heritage: Observe the “teitos” with respect. They are fragile and protected constructions. Do not go on roofs or enter if they are closed.
  • Family: It is an ideal route to do with children due to the wide and safe track, although you have to take the climb slowly.
  • Photography: The evening light on the braña offers a magical contrast between the stone, the broom of the roofs and the green of the meadows.
  • Shade: Although there are sections of forest, the final climb is exposed to the sun. Wear a hat and sunscreen.

📸 Key Points

  • The popular architecture of Villar de Vildas.
  • The set of teitos from La Pornacal, unique in the world.
  • The views of the Pigüeña Valley opening towards the peaks.
  • Biodiversity: it is a bear zone and a refuge for numerous birds.
