About the species

The red deer is the largest hoofed mammal in the Asturian parks. Its roar — the rut — echoes every autumn through the valleys of the Cantabrian Range in one of the most impressive acoustic spectacles in European nature. Males carry antlers that can exceed 12 points.

Habitat
Open woodlands, scrubland and mountain pastures between 400 and 2,000 m. It favours beech and oak forests with broad grassy areas for grazing at dawn and dusk.

The roar of the mountain

The red deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus) is the most sonorous symbol of the Asturian autumn. Every September and October, the roaring of stags fills the valleys of the natural parks in one of the most impressive natural phenomena in Europe.
