About the species

The otter is the most reliable indicator of the health of Asturian rivers. An agile swimmer and excellent hunter, it lives closely tied to the crystal-clear waterways of the Cantabrian Range. Its presence guarantees that the river ecosystem is functioning at full vitality.

Habitat
Rivers, streams and reservoirs with clean, well-oxygenated water and wooded banks for shelter. It frequents the middle and lower reaches of the Narcea, Pigüeña, Esva and Cares rivers, as well as high mountain lakes.

The silent guardian of the rivers

The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) is one of the most elusive and fascinating mammals of the Asturian natural parks. For decades it disappeared from almost the entire Iberian Peninsula due to river pollution and human persecution. Its recovery in Asturias is a direct testament to the exceptional water quality found in the Cantabrian natural parks.
