About the species

The griffon vulture is the bird with the greatest wingspan in the Asturian parks, with wings that can exceed 2.6 metres. A master of soaring flight, it can cover hundreds of kilometres without barely flapping its wings by exploiting thermal currents. It plays an essential ecological role as the great recycler of the Cantabrian mountains.

Habitat
Mountain areas with rocky cliffs for nesting and large open areas for feeding. It nests in colonies on rock faces between 600 and 1,800 m.

Lord of the Cantabrian sky

The griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) is the most imposing bird of the Asturian natural parks. With a wingspan that can exceed 2.6 metres and a weight of up to 11 kg, it is one of nature’s most efficient soarers.
